Steam of Freedom

Lighthouse & Sunshine ‱ Odyssey of Men

Diary...

"Finally, we are onboard the steamboat. The journey here has been good – and a long one. We haven’t spoken much. Samuel seems a bit nervous; I don’t know why. His God must be with him everywhere. Elijah is just trying to be alone, especially on the boat. And me? I just cannot wait to eat the world." - Cain

Lyrics

Three men, on steam Boats moving Much faster Than horses can run Three men, seeking their freedom Beginning to taste it No families No father’s telling Three men, boat’s deck Men they’re smiling Faces painted Hopes and dreams Three men, steam of freedom No bonds Just whiskey Women and wit

Behind the Music

Inspiration for the song: Lighthouse (Lars): The inspiration for the song – and the album – comes from many conversations with Sunshine (Leendert). We talked about our lives in our twenties, which were wild years filled with alcohol, women, and wit – just as the lyrics say. Sunshine was in the Netherlands, while I was in Denmark, but neither of us could wait to leave home. For me, the first stop was London, where I bartended in Covent Garden. I lived upstairs above the pub, right next to the tube station. After London, I moved to Spain, Greece, and Thailand, working in jobs like hotel receptionist, office worker, and travel agency representative. It was easy to write the lyrics for the song because I just had to recall my thoughts from back then. I lived out of a bag with only some clothes, a toothbrush, and a huge appetite for the world. I barely thought about my family at all – I just couldn’t get enough of eating the world, as I saw it. These years were some of the most formative of my life. I experienced it all: loneliness, love, friendship, heartbreak, and countless conversations at countless bars. In Greece, I realized I needed to change things – my hands would start shaking at 4 pm, and the only cure was a huge gin and tonic. I was living life fast, with no real plan. I did my work and then simply enjoyed life, ready to grab every opportunity that came my way – except drugs, which I never found interesting. Looking back, I do not regret anything I did. Some things could have been handled better, and some things should never have been done, but I learned from them all. Not necessarily right away, but over time. They all made me the person I am today. Sunshine (Leendert): For me, reading the lyrics, it felt like it had to have a "happy" sound. It feels like an adventure, a new world and new experiences. That's why the sound of this song is upbeat and has a brighter tone, with all major chords. This song is a song that needs to feel like you want to step out into the big world, smile at it, and wander off into the big uknown, maybe even dancing on your way to a new adventure.
