Make Your Peace

Lighthouse & Sunshine ‱ Odyssey of Men

Diary...

"God, I pray and pray. Nothing happens. I thought You should help me." - Samuel

Lyrics

Father, Father, I am a sinner Son, we are all sinners Father, I played with women, I gambled, I cheated I drank, fighting and taking a man's life Father, Father what shall I do Son what happened has happened But Father my cross is so heavy to bear Too heavy to carry Happiness has left me for good Samuel, Samuel just stay and find peace But Father can I be healed Yes, you can be freed from your burdens and tied to your neighbor You've done bad but now it's time for good Samuel, 7 years of devotion And still God isn't hearing me Samuel you've prayed and you've served You have done all you canLeave for home and make your peace Choose to make peace Choose to make peace Choose to make peace Make your peace

Behind the music

Inspiration for the song: Sunshine (Leendert): I have fond memories with this song. I don't think this song was the first one written by Lighthouse, but it was one of the first ones. This was also the first song we recorded together back in July 2025. For us, as a duo, it was the first experience together in a studio. I had actually written the music to this song already, which originally was meant to be a song for my late grandmother. This means for me personally, that I have strong feelings about this particular piece of music. The whole setting, the whistle and the voice, makes it a whole-hearted western/americana song and will always be one of my favourites. I am happy that the music that I originally wrote for a song for my grandmother, is used in this fantastic emotional and heartfelt song. Lighthouse (Lars): I started writing music and poems late in life. I was 53 years old. I had never been able to write poems or lyrics before, but suddenly, words were flowing from my pen while sitting in an Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos, Greece. Sitting in that monastery, words just poured out of me—like they had been waiting for decades. It was as if God finally answered, not with a voice, but with a pen. From then on, Sunshine and I could stop playing cover songs and instead write our own music—I wrote the lyrics, and Sunshine composed the music. Make Your Peace was our first song. It was quite easy to write because I should have made peace with my parents but never really did. When my father died, I remember saying, as life left him: "Dad, we never really spoke." And then I could suddenly say all the things I had kept inside for 40 years—things I should have said to him while he was alive. But words do not flow easily in my family. My mum told my wife a couple of years ago that she and I had never really spoken together. So there we go again... Luckily, I feel that I have made peace. When I had my son Malcolm, Malcolm and I visited my parents almost every day. I saw the deep love my father and mother had for Malcolm. Their love was huge, and Malcolm was so loved. The love between us four was so great—a wordless love, as it goes in our family. But still, love. I’ve learned that peace isn’t about saying everything. Sometimes it’s about finally understanding what was left unsaid.
