Cain's Downfall

Lighthouse & Sunshine ‱ Odyssey of Men

Diary...

"Another good night last night. I am becoming a good gambler. I can read people. I think they do not dare to read my mind. They are afraid of the rage they will meet. Ha ha. I never thought my rage could do me any good. It has always gotten me into trouble. Not now. I got to visit the captain of the boat so I can lock up my winnings. I should send some money home. Maybe tomorrow." - Cain

Lyrics

Lumen cadit Umbra oritur Fatum non deficit Fatum non deficit Brothers are leaving the boat One with light steps, head high One with heavy step, head low Cain nods at both men Farewell my brothers Somewhere we will meet again Glass of whiskey at the bar Makes his hands stop shaking Through the glass Cain seeks his prey Cain is high on luck Chips are piling up Cain feels uneasy Where to has she gone Hi my sweet baby Where are you now Cain sees her all alone Hand meets hand on the railing No one says a word A sudden move, steel flashes (Lumen cadit) Cain falls down (Umbra oritur) Cain thinks, that was that (Fatum non deficit) Cain thinks, that was that (Fatum non deficit) Golddigger in gown grabs chips Golddigger in suit lifts Cain Cain's body hits the water Cain's body floats away, Cain's body floats away Eyes open but cannot see Farewell my brothers Somewhere we will meet again

Behind the music

Inspiration for the song: Lighthouse (Lars): There are two true stories in this song from my own life. My hands would shake if I did not get alcohol around 4 p.m. every day. (See Behind the Music of Steam of Freedom.) The second true story is my view on women in my early life. Women were prey for a good night. I did not seek a girlfriend or deep relationships. I looked for fun, and the very best fun was good fun with a girl. Some girls fell in love with me, and I must apologize to them. I was not a man to fall in love with at that time—I had no love to give back. I was eating the world, and there was always a new dish coming. The story of Cain’s Downfall is my attempt to write the story of my life if I had stayed in my hedonistic lifestyle. I would have died, as my big brother did in his thirties. My big brother could not leave the bottle. Too many demons in his head. May you rest in peace, my brother. Sunshine (Leendert): This song needed to be dark. This song is the most heartbreaking song of them all. For me, Lighthouse went all out on the consequences of choices being made in life. Of course this is fiction, but in the story of the three brothers, it felt real. For me that meant that the music and the vocals for this song, had to be a bit darker, especially the double bass. The double bass pictures the bells tolling in the distance, bells that are announcing the death of Cain and the betrayal of people. Lighthouse came up with the fabulous idea of adding a munk choir, which I really enjoyed recording and singing the different voices for. I came up with these Latin lines that fit the song extremely well: "Lumen cadit Umbra oritur Fatum non deficit" Which translates to: "The light falls, the shadow rises, fate does not fail."
